Archive for Mercedes

Last week we spotted the SL63 AMG undergoing some Nurburg ring time in Germany, the car was lapping with the standard SL so was easily missed.

Although still covered in camouflage, these pictures prove that Mercedes-Benz have officially begun final testing of the next-generation SL63 AMG, which will be on the market in 2012 or 2013.

Underhood we expect to see Mercedes new 5.5L twin-turbo V8, generating around 570 horsepower. Distributing the power to the rear wheels will be the Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission from AMG.

Look closely and you’ll see large air ducting and a more sugestive fascia leering out from behind the camouflage. Performance brakes with cross-drilled floating rotors are clearly visible, although Mercedes has hidden the SL AMG’s exhaust outlets to look like those found on the normal SL.

Expect a teaser at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 2010 before the likely full release in 2011.

Today at the Nurburgring Nordshleife Public day the awe inspiring SLR Stirling Moss edition turned up to do a lap or two of the infamous nordschleife, A very noble cause considering the many danger’s on the Northloop and the whopping 750k euro price tag.

The car was inspired by the 1955 300 SLR that Moss guided to the Mille Miglia record of ten hours & seven minutes and 48 seconds.

The power unit consists of a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 from the SLR 722 edition, meaning there’s a whopping 641bhp and 605lb ft, taking the speedster to 62mph in sub 3.5sec and onto a Vmax of 217mph.

The performance is a level above that of the rest of the Mercedes Mclaren range thanks to some handy weightloss regime including a carbonfibre body sheding approximately 200kg from the Standard SLR.

Owners will be able to personally compare the two, as the 75 Stirling Moss editions are only available to current SLR owners.

It rounds off production of the SLR – the best selling supercar ever, at around 1700 units.

It also the end of the McMerc supercar partnership – the Germans going their own way with the SLS and McLaren making its first independent car since the legendary F1 in the form of the MP4-12c.

The Isle of Man TT, David Coulthard and a Mercedes SLS AMG make the world’s fastest 3d Film.

The film was shot on the Isle of Man, where they shut the Mountain Road which is part of the iconic TT road circuit, to allow ex-F1 driver and F1 commentator David Coulthard to put the Mercedes SLS AMG through its paces, and reach 162mph along the way.

The second car to track and film the Coultard led drive was a second SLS AMD driven by Robbie Head.

So if you happen to be around a 3d public house it will be shown on “SKY” tv’s pub channel.

At the ADAC Eifel Rennen this weekend we spotted the Chuck Porter Mercedes 300 SLS,  the “S” defines that it was a wrecked 300 SL Gullwing and Chuyck Porter went about rebuilding the Mercedes marque.

After Mercedes-Benz retired their highly successful 300 SLR program, many racing teams and amateur drivers started creating their own versions from the 300 SL production cars. These became known as the SLS and most were prepared with a wide variety of modifications. One of the most famous of these is the Porter roadster which was actively campaigned in America.
Chuck Porter used a wrecked 300 SL Gullwing to create his own SLS. A new body was designed out of his body shop in Hollywood, California and executed by Jack Sutton from .064 aluminum sheet. For the most part, the body stayed faithful to the Mercedes-Benz styling. It featured a much wider front opening, no windscreen, removed doors and a custom interior.

Despite working from a fire-damaged hulk, Porter persisted with the SLS. After it was done, the car was considerably taller than the SLR, since the production SL is much taller than the SLR’s grand-prix chassis. This didn’t stop it from keeping up with the fastest cars in its class with drivers like Ken Miles, Billy Krause and Porter himself.

The car was used from 1956 until 1962, later being fitted with a few different American V8s. Throughout this colorful career, the Porter Special challenged even the Ferraris and Maseratis of the period. This was possible even though the engine was pretty much stock except for a factory performance camshaft.

Sports Car Illustrated tested the Porter SLS against a factory aluminum-bodied 300 SL Coupe and found the SLS to be considerably faster. In 1999 the car was restored by HK-Engineering and subsequently raced at the Monterey Historic Races.

2011 Mercedes ML 63 AMG

Posted by: Tony Dewhurst | Comments (0)

Mercedes unveils its updated exterior on the ML 63 AMG, featuring a powerful 375 kW (510 hp) AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, takes on a more attractive appearance thanks to some subtle but effective changes.

From the front, the eye is immediately drawn to the new bonnet with power domes, and the darkened bi-xenon headlamps with active light function. The rear, meanwhile, also contributes appropriately to the new look: the performance SUV now features darkened tail lamps incorporating a clear-lens design and LED technology. The subtle changes to the exterior coordinate perfectly with the high-gloss, chromed front and rear underguard, and afford the ML 63 AMG an even more powerful and distinctive appearance.

Still boasting a power output of 375 kW (510 hp) at 6800/rpm as well as 630 Nm of torque, the ML 63 AMG is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, and achieves a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). At the renowned International Engine of the Year Awards in 2009, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine took the top places in both the “Best Performance Engine” and “Above 4 litres” categories.

As before, power transfer is taken care of via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with three drive modes. The permanent all-wheel drive is decidedly sporty: the power is split asymmetrically 40:60 between the front and rear wheels to provide optimum agility. The AMG sports suspension, based on the AIRMATIC package with air suspension, adaptive damping system ADS and automatic level control all-round, provides dynamic performance combined with the hallmark Mercedes long-distance comfort. The generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system, which features internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round, ensures short braking distances and optimum resistance to fading.

The ML 63 AMG comes with 5-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, which are painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with 295/40 R 20 tyres on the front and rear. As an optional extra, titanium-grey-painted, high-sheen twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels fitted with 295/35 R 21 tyres are also available.

As usual, the interior of the ML 63 AMG is both functional and high-quality: electrically adjustable AMG sports seats finished in nappa leather upholstery, with Alcantara inserts in the shoulder areas and multicontour function and heating, are complemented by the AMG sports steering wheel with AMG aluminium shift paddles and perforated leather on the specially-shaped grip area. A nappa leather-trimmed dashboard is also available as an optional extra.

The updated ML 63 AMG is available to order with immediate effect and will be delivered to customers from July 2010. It carries a price tag of 105,077 euros (incl. 19% VAT).

Today the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Cabriolet sneaked a quick lap on the Nurburgring.

These spy shots dont reveal the Cabriolet hood fitments as it is still hidden under camouflage the active air brake is also visible providing valuable downforce.

Containing the same AMG 6.3 litre V8 found in the SLS Gullwing, the Cabriolet should be able of approaching the coupe’s 195mph top whack and sub 4.7 second 0-62mph time.

Also strangely the SLS will lose one of its characteristics the Gullwing door but im sure something special will be used to make his another iconic legend.

Somebody mentioned today it could be a Targa Top only time will reveal its true secrets.

The Pistonspy took these photos of the upcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML AMG just before it began testing at the nurburgring. The pictures arent great quality as he was avoiding being snapped.

Though heavily camouflaged, The ML AMG was identified with the characteristics such as the AMG wheels with the logo aptly taped out, big cross-drilled brake discs.
