The Frikadelli Racing Team is a privately held German Motorsports Team.

Started in 2005 by Klaus Abbelen a succesfull butcher where the nickname “Meatball” AKA Frikadelli if you Sprechende deutsch.

The car proudly displays one of the infamous meatballs on its detailing, along with one of my favorite German Beers Früh Kölsch.

The team consists of the driver and 2 times winner of the ADAC 24h Race Sabine Schmitz along with Team Owner Klaus Abbelen and numerous mechanics and support staff.

In 2010 they went from the amateur interest to a professionel motor sport team. At Barweiler, located directly at the Nuerburgring they built a 1800 square meter garage complex which is now the headquarter for “Meatball” and his team.

In the season 2011 Frikadelli Raced two Porsche racing cars for the VLN Long Distance Championship and the Nordschleife 24h race. Sabine Schmitz, Klaus Abbelen and Niclas Kentenich came in 6th place in the SP9 GT3 Class.

“GEMBALLA racing” to enter two McLaren MP4-12C GT3s in the 2012 motorsport season

Posted by: Tony Dewhurst | Comments (1)

Frankfurt, 22/08/2011. Setting yet another milestone in the year of its 30th Anniversary, GEMBALLA is proud to announce the debut of GEMBALLA racing. The new team will enter two McLaren MP4-12C GT3 cars in the 2012 motorsport season.

Team owner and GEMBALLA investor, Steffen Korbach, has hired Sascha Bert to manage his new motorsport venture. A well-known racing driver and instructor, Bert is a former German kart champion, Formula 3 and FIA GT driver, and has stood on the winners’ podium at the Nürburgring VLN 24-hour race amongst others. As Korbach said in Frankfurt today, “Sascha Bert is an absolute pro, and is ideally qualified to manage our new racing team.”

“We chose the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 because we think this car has the potential to be one of the season’s leaders,” Korbach explained. “We have also put together a team of drivers and mechanics who are proven winners. Racing is in our blood! We want to win!”

The GEMBALLA name has been synonymous with high performance, reliability and extraordinary qualities for 30 years. Now, 17 years after the McLaren F1 GTR won the gruelling 24-hours of Le Mans on its debut outing, GEMBALLA racing will capitalise on McLaren’s competition pedigree to mount its own challenge.

Race bred by a marque that has always been a front-runner in Formula 1, the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 incorporates world-class technology. Based on the recently launched MP4-12C supercar, the GT3 racecar features a 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine, bespoke racing gearbox, carbon safety cell, race front splitter, large fixed rear wing, optimised air vents at the front and a racing diffuser at the rear. The steering wheel with integrated display is an ode to Formula 1.

2012 911 Porsche – Spyshots

Porsche’s next 911, known internally as the 991 has been spied in predelivery specification in southern Germany.

The 991 will be a totally reworked version of the current 996/997 platform, with the longer wheel base we expect a bit more lateral grip than previous 911′s.

The powerunit will be the naturally aspirated flat six, likely in two displacements, as is currently 997.

We don’t expect any increase in power but expect it to be lighter by about 35kg than the current model from increased use of aluminimum body panels.

We expect there will be a coupe and a convertible body as well along with future GT2 and GT3 models.

Expect more to be revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt IAA in September.

2013 Porsche Cayman Spotted at The Nurburgring

Posted by: Tony Dewhurst | Comments (0)

The 2013 Porsche Cayman has been spied on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Even though the prototype is camouflaged, we can clearly see that the car will adopt similar light clusters as the 911 prototypes along with a slightly less man like air intake.

Also we can make out some daylight running lights underneath the thickly clad camo tape.

We expect the Cayman S power output to be around the 320hp with an improved 3.4 liter and the standard Cayman to be around 265hp powered by the usual 2.9 liter.

We are expecting the new line of Porsches to be released in the second quarter of 2012.

GEMBALLA TORNADO announced on 30th birthday

Posted by: Tony Dewhurst | Comments (0)

GEMBALLA GmbH have announce the debut of the TORNADO, based on the new Porsche Cayenne 958.

This is the first creation since the untimely departure of the previous owner uwe Gemballa

In the past, it was commonplace to bond carbon-fibre parts to modified factory steel panels. However, this does not significantly lighten a car, nor is it a rigorous use of this lightweight material. “Carbon-fibre is a high strength, low weight structural material that needs to be used honestly, and not just for decoration,” explains GEMBALLA GmbH CEO, Andreas Schwarz.

Thus, other than its steel body-in-white, rear quarter and roof panels and hatchback, almost all the steel body panels on the TORNADO are replaced by carbon-fibre equivalents. The carbon-fibre bonnet, front wings, side sill covers, doors, front and rear bumper/valance and rear hatch outer skin save around 70kg compared to the original steel panels and PU bumpers, and all the new panels use the factory mounting points.

While this is an expensive alternative to the traditional methods, there is a good reason to do it this way apart from just weight saving. “Cutting, filing, and then bonding and blending materials with different coefficients of expansion is setting yourself up for problems further down the line unless the work is done perfectly,” says Andreas Schwarz.

The new front styling delivers significant autobahn overtaking presence with the large grille, flanked by two smaller ones providing copious amounts of ram air for the two stages of uprated, twin-turbocharged engine. Brake cooling ducts sit beside the fog lights, and the vertical LED daytime running lights also help to give the GEMBALLA Tornado that all-important instant recognition factor.

The steel structure of the tailgate is mated to a new carbon-fibre skin, which re-contours it and covers the recesses and holes provided for the inner half of the factory tail light assemblies.

The new, stacked round rear light design completely changes the look of the Cayenne’s rear, reinforcing the four individual round exhaust outlets, a long-standing GEMBALLA design motif.

If the angels are in the details, a close inspection of the GEMBALLA badge on the new tailgate reveals lettering cut out with incredible precision. Here, the same ultra high-pressure water jet cutting process used in the electronics industry to slice through heat sensitive circuit boards, is used to cut the GEMBALLA name out of a piece of carbon-fibre. The brushed stainless steel panel below provides the silver colouring.

The enlarged wheel arches are filled by huge wheels, 10.0J x 22-inch with 295/35 ZR22 tyres on the front axle, and 12.0J x 22-inch with 335/30 ZR22 tyres at the rear.

Despite their greater size, these forged, ultra-light and strong monoblock alloys are no heavier than the standard 20-inch wheels. And thanks to their narrow-spoke design, they appear to be even larger in diameter than they actually are.

The uprated braking system is made by Brembo, GEMBALLA’s partner for brake component development. Massive 420mm vented discs with six-pot callipers are used at the front, with 405mm vented discs and four-pot callipers at the rear. All four discs are cross-drilled and slotted, and made exclusively for GEMBALLA in these sizes.

GEMBALLA already offers a Stage One Cayenne Turbo engine conversion with 580hp. The TORNADO will be equipped with Stage Two, which is nearing its final development stage.

The goal for the engineers was well defined, a 35-40% power increase, which equates to between 675 and 700hp. The projected torque increase of 30%, or close to 1,000Nm, requires the relevant drivetrain components to be uprated as well.

The GEMBALLA TORNADO celebrates the 30th year of the GEMBALLA brand in 2011. Only 30 numbered GEMBALLA TORNADO cars will be built, making this a very special and exclusive model.
